Forklift Components in More Detail
There are numerous components which make up a forklift. The forklifts main components include the frame of the truck, the engine parts, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. In addition, a forklift consists of a variety of attachments. All the parts making up a forklift are of equal importance as they work together to make the machine's functions possible. The next paragraphs describe in detail some of the forklift parts.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is actually the forklifts metal roof, that sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator while they are utilizing the machinery. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck would harm the driver or damage the controls inside the cab. The overhead guard is vital to the frame assembly on several units.
The Mast - the mast is a vertical assembly made of interlocking rails and mounted either to the front axle or the forklift frame. The mast provides lateral stability and allows the forks to move up and down. The interlocking rails could either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast could be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Forklift Carriage - The carriage is the part that the forks and various other attachments are mounted to. Actually, the carriage is directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder and is connected by chains. To enable the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage could have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - When the carriage is raised to full height, there is a back rest made of metal which prevents a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - There are many types of attachments that can be fixed directly to the forklifts carriage. Forks are the most common attachment. In addition, there are rotators, rollers, L-shaped members, pole handlers, roll clamps and so on. These different attachments are useful for transporting different types of loads.
